Other Defences
Blakang Mati was fortified in the late 1800s as part of the major expansion of Singapore’s harbour defences. Four coastal artillery batteries were built on the island. From west to east; Fort Siloso, Mount Imbiah, Fort Serapong and Fort Connaught.
Fort Siloso survives preserved as the Singapore Gun Museum. Substantial remains of the battery on Mount Imbiah and of Fort Serapong remain. Remains of Fort Serapong’s satellite gun emplacement Berhala Reping, which had Twin Six Pounder Emplacement can still be found. This is on the Serapong Golf Course and there is no public access to it. Most of Fort Connaught has disappeared, but some remains can still be found. These are on the Tanjong Gold Course and also not accessible to the public. For details of these and other gun batteries in Singapore, see the section entitled, ‘Other Gun Batteries’.
Other defensive positions still to be found on Sentosa include pillboxes on Siloso and Central Beaches. Other structures still exist, but are rapidly being demolished to make way for new facilities on Sentosa.
Some pillboxes survive on Singapore Island, notably the ones on the Pasir Panjang Road and by 64 Sime Road (a private residence) formerly called Flagstaff House where Lt Gen Percival lived.
