Fort Siloso 6 Inch BL Battery - The Magazine

The Magazine below the 6-Inch Battery. Compare this to the plan of the 9.2-Inch emplacement shown in the history of Fort Siloso 1885-1918 (right). The extension enabling the Magazine to service two 6 Inch Guns is clearly seen in the left-hand plan.
There are what is said to be two blocked doorways in the present magazine which were said to have led up to the 64 Pounder Guns. The position of these doors is marked with the letter ‘D’ in the left-hand diagram. Now, if these were indeed doorways, they would be facing the direction of any incoming fire and would be a very week spot in the protection of the Magazine. I've never seen a magazine with access to the guns from it being in a position facing incoming fire. That said, the 64 Pounders were not emplaced above this magazine. My own opinion is that these ‘doorways’ are places where the NCO in charge would stand and command the crew working in the area.

The entrance to the Magazine from the path between the Siloso Point underground complex and the Casemates (Gunners Shelter). The stairs seen in the centre of the photograph on the left take you up the the No. 1 Gun Emplacement.
On entering the magazine there is a twelve metre tunnel which slopes down and to the right.
On the left as you enter the Magazine is the entrance to a Long Storage Room.
